What do we know about new coronavirus

The end of December 2019 was marked not by Christmas bustle, but by an outbreak of an unknown virus that began to take away human lifes quickly. The Chinese city of Wuhan (Hubei Province) has become the epicenter of pneumonia of unknown origin.
The scientific name for the corona virus that still holds the whole world at bay is Coronavirus COVID-19, or 2019-nCoV.

This infectious disease caused by a new type of virus leads to the development of a respiratory flu-like illness, among the main symptoms of which are cough, fever, shortness of breath, and in the most severe cases – pneumonia.

After the virus enters the body, it settles in the cells, where it actively begins to create copies of itself. Then begins the “capture” of all healthy cells.

A special danger of coronavirus for humanity is COVID-19`s extremly infectivity and a long incubation period

When a person becomes infected, he does not even suspect it and can spread this virus for 2 weeks, feeling absolutely healthy.
First symptoms of COVID-2019 may appear 2-14 days after exposure.

Consider several stages of the course of the disease:

Easy stage.
The first signs of the disease appear: weakness, fever, cough. Immunity begins to actively fight the virus. The infected person has a chance to quickly cope with the disease. Usually, recovery occurs within one week (if the disease does not go into a severe stage).

According to statistics, 80% of people have a mild form of 2019-nCoV coronavirus infection

Severe stage.
Not everyone has good health and strong immunity. Due to the presence of chronic diseases and other health disorders, such patients are at higher risk. Coronavirus infection can be more complicate.

Emergency warning signs:

  • Trouble breathing
  • Persistent pain or pressure in the chest
  • New confusion or inability to arouse
  • Bluish lips or face

If the body cannot defeat the virus, then a strong inflammatory process occurs that can result in pneumonia.
The patient must be hospitalized. He needs additional oxygen or even a mechanical ventilation (artificial ventilation of the lungs).

According to observations, the number of severe cases of coronavirus is about 6%

Critical stage. The saddest stage…

Recovery from coronavirus

In most cases, coronavirus can be cured. From the sad news – noted that some of the recovered patients have decreased lung function by about 20-30%. Therefore, after discharge and return home, patients are still under the supervision of their doctors. In addition, after an illness, immunity from it is not stable. There are several cases in China when people where recovered, but new coronavirus testing shows infection.
Unfortunately, the hope is only for total vaccination of the population. But there is no vaccine yet.

Coronavirus appeared now or was it always known?

Nothing is new in this world. Viruses too. Coronaviruses are a whole family of flu-like viruses that have been known for a long time. This is not a new type of virus; it is only a new strain called COVID-19.
Here is a short chronology of coronaviruses:coronavirus-is

  1. Until 2002. Coronavirus was a rare disease. Medicine already knew him. During this period, coronavirus was considered a virus that causes mild diseases of the upper respiratory tract. Fatal outcome was extremely rare.
  2. 2002 – 2012 years. Atypical pneumonia (caused by SARS-CoV coronavirus). 37 countries “participated” in the epidemy, the number of infected – more than 8,000 people, with a fatal outcome – more than 770. Since then, no new cases of infection with this type of virus have been recorded.
  3. 2013 – 2019 years. Middle Eastern respiratory syndrome (caused by the MERS-CoV coronavirus), which exists to this day. Infected – more than 2,500, with a fatal outcome – more than 860.
  4. December 2019 – our days. A new strain of coronavirus is COVID-19 (caused by SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus).

How do people get infected by coronavirus?

COVID-19 is new disease, we don`t know every way how it spreads. For now it’s obvious that it’s enough to stand next to the sick person, to communicate at a close distance (6 feet is enough), to use his phone or other object so that this leads to infection.
How is COVID-19 coronavirus transmitted:

  • coronavirus-sneezingRespiratory droplets are the easiest and most common way to spread this virus. Talking to the infected person could be enough. Try never inhale someone`s sneezing or coughing. Airborne infection is the entry into the air of infected droplets smaller than 5 microns (0.005 mm) in size. In the case of a droplet size in diameter of more than 5 microns – this is a drip infection. It turns out that the heavier drops settle to the floor and other surfaces, and the light ones fly in the air in search of a new habitat and breeding.
  • Contact way – through a handshake and other touches to the body of an infected person, as well as using the same objects, things, products, all that he used, what the infected person touched or sneezed on. Then if you touch your face/eyes/lips before washing your hands – virus can get inside of you. Wash your hands often!

The first symptoms of coronavirus infection

The virus COVID-19 in general symptoms is very similar to most viral diseases, including SARS.

As soon as a healthy person has caught the virus, it can take about 14 days before he feels unwell and sees the first signs of the disease. How does the body react to coronavirus?

First symptoms:

  1. fever (> 90% cases);
  2. cough, mostly dry (80%);
  3. shortness of breath (55%);
  4. muscle pain, weakness (44%).

Also, some patients with COVID-19 reported the following symptoms:

  1. pressure in the chest, trouble breathing (> 20%);
  2. severe headache;
  3. drops of blood when coughing;
  4. indigestion, diarrhea;
  5. nausea, vomiting.

All the symptoms described are very similar to the common flu or a cold.

Therefore, it is important to consult your doctor immediately: only he can prescribe tests and detect coronavirus.
Decisions about testing are at the discretion of state and local health departments and/or individual clinicians.

What to do if you are sick?

If you are sick and you suspect that it is COVID-19, do the following:

  1. Stay home;
  2. Call CDC Coronavirus Hotline: 800-232-4636 or call your doctor directly, stay in touch;
  3. Isolate yourself from people – patients with a corona virus should not be in contact with anyone, including pets;
  4. Better to have your own towel and dishes, uwn bathroom and “sick room” if it is possible;
  5. If you have to go out, avoid close conacts, wear cloth covering over your nose and mouth, cover your coughs and sneezes.

In the case of coronavirus, self-medication is strictly prohibited!

Coronavirus protection for you and other people

Better way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to COVID-19.
Here are some advices:

  • Self-isolation, which all the media speaking about. facemask-coverTo do this, you must refuse to visit your favorite, familiar places, where the number of people reaches more than 10 people. You must forget about nightclubs, gyms, shopping centers, cinemas, public transport and other crowded places.
  • While on the street, do not touch your face with your hands, do not scratch your nose, eyes. This is very difficult to do, because each person unconsciously does it about 15 times per hour! When you get home, immediately wash your hands and face with soap. Wash at least 20 seconds.
  • Wipe constantly those surfaces and objects with which you are in constant contact on the street and going home: a cell phone, a car steering wheel, door handles, keys, etc. Clean and disinfect. To do this, use any disinfectant alcohol wipes or most common EPA-registered household disinfectants.
  • Greet you friends at a distance without touching either the hands or face of a person. It is best to even do without words – greet with an open palm, keep your distance.
  • Always wear a Cloth Face Coverings when you are going out, or communicating someone.

Coronavirus vaccine – have scientists managed to create something?

Not yet.
In addition to the invention of the vaccine (and we already have some cases and foreign scientists too), it still needs to be tested. Unfortunately, the tests are complicated by the fact that the COVID-19 strain mutates at a high speed – this complicates the work of virologists.
However, despite this, there is every chance of getting a ready-made vaccine for coronavirus by the end of 2020.
Until then, we all need to be very careful.
